But dietary supplements can are more than just vitamins and minerals. Supplements that contain herbs are also quite popular. Herbal supplements can complement a diet and treat various diseases. They come in many forms, including pills and liquids that can be consumed various ways. Teas, tinctures and extracts are the three most popular.

Nutritional needs change as we get older which is why many older people are now taking supplements. However, there are also more risks to older people. Since people over 50 tend to take more medications, there is a greater chance of interaction between certain supplements and their prescription medication. Some supplements can also cause complications during or after surgery.

While many dietary supplements have proven health benefits, beware of supplements that sound too good to be true. Supplements that claim to be "miracle cures" or "the latest scientific breakthrough" and those that claim immediate results like "lose 10 pounds a week," typically do nothing. This is especially important for older Americans because these supplements often target them by making claims about diseases that strike the older population.
